Does my child need a referral for speech or occupational therapy?

Not for an early intervention or school evaluation — parents can request those directly. Private insurance and Medicaid often require a doctor's prescription or referral before they pay for outpatient therapy, so ask your plan and the clinic.

What is early intervention?

Under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, every state runs a program that evaluates infants and toddlers under 3 for developmental delays at no cost and provides services for eligible children. The ECTA Center lists each state's contact.

Does Medicaid cover speech and occupational therapy for children?

Medicaid's EPSDT benefit requires states to cover medically necessary services for enrolled children under 21, which can include speech and occupational therapy. Ask the clinic whether it accepts your child's Medicaid plan.

What does “Registry-checked” mean?

The provider's National Provider Identifier is active in the federal NPPES registry run by CMS. It is not a quality rating and not a license check — confirm licenses with your state board.

Why aren't individual speech therapists listed?

NPPES has more than 200,000 individual speech-language pathologists, many working in schools and hospitals, so we list practices and agencies instead. Pediatric occupational therapists are listed individually because their registered specialty is specifically pediatric.
